Creative English course
By discovery, not by the book
I’m a native-English speaker, an experienced teacher, and a working artist who moved to Toulouse in 2025. My teaching career began in 2014, when I graduated from NYU Steinhardt with a Master’s degree in Social Studies Education and was honored with the Graduate Award for Excellence in Public Service.
Discovery is at the center of how I teach. Every lesson should let a student find something for themselves, from their own perspective– as real learning happens through open, respectful inquiry and discourse. My job is to create an environment where students feel safe enough to be wrong out loud.
What that looks like in practice
When I taught in New York, my students spent a semester preparing an abolitionist press conference, debating the merits of passive versus active forms of resistance. In a city where race politics is deeply woven into the history of every neighborhood, watching students actually embody arguments from diverse perspectives was moving to witness. It took real care to facilitate this activity in a way that let everyone feel safe handling something that sensitive. I was proud of how they rose to the challenge.
A word about the path here
I moved to Toulouse for love, and I didn’t really start learning French until I let go of learning it “perfectly” and started from what actually interests me instead: music, literature, films, and ecology. The teachers who taught solely “by the book” never reached me as a student – I’d be a hypocrite teaching that way now.
I have an ongoing artistic practice as a songwriter, and every residency, film score, and album I’ve made has involved its own process of discovery. Staying a student of my own work is what keeps me humble as a teacher. I’m always learning alongside the people I teach.
How a course works
Every course starts with a conversation. I build curriculum around your goals as a student: each unit, or series of units, will entail written and oral work from material tied to your own “north star” as an English learner.
